Automation Testing

Test automation is the use of software to control the execution of test, the comparison of actual outcomes to predicted outcomes, the setting up of test preconditions, and other test control and test reporting functions. Commonly, test automation involves automating a manual process already in place that uses a formalized testing process.
Test automation is a process of writing a computer program to do testing that would otherwise need to be done manually.
This is most  cost effective for software product that will have a long shelf life, because even minor patches over the lifetime of  the application can cause features to break which were working at an earlier point in time.

 QTP
HP Quick Test Professional software provides functional and regression test automation for software applications and environments. Part of the HP Quality Center tool suite, HP Quick Test Professional can be used for enterprise quality assurance.
HP Quick Test Professional supports keyword and scripting interfaces and features a graphical user interface. It uses the Visual Basic Scripting Edition (VB Script) scripting language to specify a test procedure, and to manipulate the objects and controls of the application under test
HP Quick Test Professional was originally written by Mercury Interactive. Mercury Interactive was subsequently acquired by Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2006.HP Quick Test Professional 11 is currently available from HP Software Division.
